Winchester-based architectural firm AR Design Studio has sent us photos of the Sarum Road project.
Completed in 2010, this two story remodeled house is located in Winchester, a historic cathedral city, Hampshire, UK.
Sarum Road Residence by AR Design Studio
“The original dark and cramped house was transformed into a contemporary, bright space by careful cost-effective redesign, extension and refurbishment.
An open plan kitchen/living/dining area is flooded with natural light by the use of a large rooflight and double height space at the heart of the house, and enjoys expansive views and access onto the garden.
The exterior was given a new lease of life with white render and cedar cladding while a frameless glass entrance canopy gives a taste of the bespoke architectural features that await inside.”

I think this house has found the perfect mix of oldschool & newschool.
One thing I’ve always wondered though is how practical are those big “opening door walls” are? I mean sure you can open them and let fresh air in & pretty much connect the outside & inside spaces, however doesn’t it let in tons of bugs & potentially birds/other animals…
Hi we were the Architects on the job .. to date there has not been an issue with insects or animals. I guess if you lived by a lake it may be an issue. Not sure animals are really that interested in coming into houses.
