This project is the perfect example of how an architect can work their magic and make something wonderful out of very little to work with. The building formerly on this site, a 110 year old heritage villa, was dilapidated and sad, located as it was in a cramped lot in one of the busiest residential streets of Ponsonby, a suburban neighborhood of Auckland, New Zealand. It was magically restored and renovated by the architectural firm Matter in 2017.
The resulting home, covering an area of 300 square meters, has three bedrooms and one bathroom, and belongs to a young family.
The home’s interior is elegant and stylish, making use of a soft color palette in order to imbue every space with a soft sense of tranquility. The brick used on the exterior walls seeps inside, creating a flow of continuity, as well as giving the interior spaces a touch of style. The décor used is minimalistic in nature, adding to the general feel of stillness that pervades all spaces.
The bathroom is spacious and almost feels like a spa, creating a perfect space to relax after a long day of work. The same general feel extends to the outdoor pool, with seats surrounding a fireplace nearby – the perfect spot in which to spend time with friends and family.
