Many homes that incorporate a slightly rustic aesthetic tend to be very grand and feature statement pieces. You might enjoy the emphasis on whining wood finishes and the natural setting of the home but actually prefer a structure and decor scheme that manages to be somehow more understated in its rustic resplendence. Some designers seek to achieve that by sticking to natural textiles and materials in the building and decor, but also adoption a sort of minimalist chic shape and detail, skipping the pomp and circumstance in favour of simplicity. That’s exactly what the creators of Casa M sought to do!

Located in Riscone, Italy, Casa M is a large, stunning private home built right onto the side of a grassy hill. This hill is nestled right into the mountains, providing residents and visitors with with a view that’s nothing short of breathtaking. Completed in late 2015, this home was designed by Comfort_Architecten. They kept the outside simple, made of linear wooden beams in a beautiful charcoal colour. The shape is quite modern, making the house stand out from the surrounding area and the countryside in a unique but still understated way thanks to the streamlined nature of the rest of the exterior features.

Moving inside the home, you’ll see that the unique blend of understated and rustic decor and construction continues throughout the rest of the house as well. The original dark charcoal colour is incorporated inside as well, giving the place a warm, not-quite industrial feel. Choosing furniture, seating, and wall or ceiling colours in a tone that’s warmer but not yet too deep saves the rooms from looking dark or unwelcoming.

What really keeps things more rustic and less industrial, however, is the inclusion of stunning wooden floors, tables, and counter tops. This lightens the aesthetic in each room and keeps this looking natural in balance with darker concrete features. The decor is where the true emphasis on simple minimalism comes through. In most rooms, the walls are kept pristine and the furniture is neat and understated, leaving a few fun shaped pendant lights to take centre stage while they give the space a warm glow.
