Remodeling – Extension of an Old Building in Belgrad, Serbia

By • Jun 25, 2018

This old building, located in Leopoldova kapija, Beograd, Serbia, was remodeled in order to obtain two extra duplexes. To this end, the architectural professionals in charge of the project, Danilo Nedeljkovic and Ela Nesic, built a new facade in a modern style that contrasts with the old construction, as an extension to the existing one to create the new volume.

Front view
Modern interior full of natural light

The work was carried out in 2018 and has an area of 300 square meters. The building and its interiors receive little natural light during the day due to its North orientation. The new glass facade also made the interior space of the new volume have much more natural light and look much brighter and more cheerful than the lower masonry floors.

Modern and elegant interior
Small kitchen in white and wood

By introducing the glass wall in the street facade, the principle of erasing the interior and exterior limits and the dematerialization of the new volume has also been achieved. The segments of the facade of the painted yellow glass were introduced to revive and refresh the glass surface of the new volume, as well as to make a visual connection with some elements of the previous facade.

View of the common office area with wooden floors and stairs

The interior space is designed to have a multipurpose use. Currently, the duplexes have a commercial purpose, but their organization could easily be transformed into classic apartments.

A Contemporary Home in Taipei, Taiwan

By • Jun 18, 2018

This beautiful apartment which, from the first, breathes tranquility and peace, was designed by C.H. Interior, and is located in Taipei, Taiwan. With simple lines, this is a place where elegance floats in the air, filling the space with a pleasant feeling of well-being. Here, wood is the protagonist, and the room is full of natural light that sneaks through the windows, creating a space filled with good taste.

Its living room, with double-level ceilings and both floors and walls of fine wood, is connected to the dining room-kitchen area. An open space, divided only by the thin line that separates the wooden floors from the kitchen tile floors, leads us to a kitchen of minimalist lines with wooden cabinets and a white countertop.

The dining room, with contemporary furniture, has a wooden table with modern and comfortable chairs in white that fits perfectly into the style of the space.

Shared House in the Middle of the City with Open Spaces

By • Jun 13, 2018

The team at the architectural firm Swing, made up of the architects Dai Kanayama and Ryusuk Anezaki, designed this project in 2018. It covers a total ground area of 146 square meters, and is located in the city of Osaka, in Japan. With this project, the main objective was to figure out how one could create an open space that would be nevertheless colored by daily landscapes, all of it covering an area under 150 square meters. One of the most important elements of shared house projects is how to achieve spaces that cannot be had in a studio apartment, so the focus of the height of each room was taken into consideration, as well as the intent to make the most of its space.

Living room-kitchen in the same room with high ceilings
Study zone

The shared house should be a happy and welcoming space for the enjoyment of everyday life, where the “ordinary and extraordinary” are mixed in that space with “individual and common” characteristics.

Its designers were responsible for maintaining an adequate height for each space, taking into account the balance between adequate space for the rooms and an open feeling for the shared living room. The look through the mezzanine to the “borrowed landscape” of the trees that line the street from the window ensures the feeling of spaciousness even within the high-density city.

Fantastic Apartment Converted Into a Refuge Amid the Bustle of the City

By • Jun 12, 2018

This wonderful apartment is located on the 29th floor of a tall building located in the heart of the city of Austin, Texas, in the United States. Its position has the advantage of offering simply incredible views of the Texan city, especially if you happen to have floor to ceiling glass walls. The architectural firm Furman + Keil Architects was commissioned to carry out this project covering a total ground area of 3200 square feet in 2015. The W Residence, the name given to the project, overlooks Lake Lady Bird.

Inspired by the work of Italian architect Carlo Scarpa, the team used a series of screens and floating roofs to subtly define finely designed spaces within the confines of the building’s concrete frame.

The inherently compressed section of the single floor was reimagined with layers and reliefs, and the design was changed from a one floor space to a series of more intimate and highly composite spaces.

The precise details and the extraordinary craftsmanship in waxed steel, patinated brass, plaster, travertine and various woods create a warm and elegant space in which to take refuge from the bustling urban activity so typical of large and populous cities.

The owner wanted to have a more luminous and spacious kitchen, to cook every day and enjoy the preparation of meals with friends. Whereas with the bathroom, the owner wanted to have a relatively independent bathroom with a bathtub.

It has two relatively private rooms, and a shared open space that, thanks to its flexibility, can serve various functions. The open space was designed to bring the occupants closer to each other while performing daily activities.

A Small Apartment as a Refuge for a Couple and Their 51 Cats

By • Mar 23, 2018

This home in the old Xuhui residential district of Shanghai in Leshan Road, China, has come to life after the fabulous renovation that was completed in 2017 thanks to the architectural firm FANAF. The project manager, architect Xin Jin, managed to create a small and cozy home space in only 31 square meters. Not only will the couple live here, but they will do so with their 51 cats. Yes, you read that right: 51 cats!

Entrance lined in wood

To begin the project, the designers lived with the clients and their cats in the space for a whole day. The unique experience allowed designers to understand the customers’ lifestyle needs and areas of concern by sharing a small area with so many cats. Through this experience, the designers identified that the room lacked separate areas. The living space of the couple was completely occupied by cats, which caused inconveniences to the owners.

The magnitude of the problem meant that it was common to find cat hair in kitchen utensils and sleep with more than a dozen cats at night. The owners did not have a place to relax alone and the guests could not sit and enjoy a conversation or stay for long periods. In addition, to prevent the cats from escaping, the windows were constantly closed, which meant that the room did not have adequate ventilation.

Wonderful Remodeling of an Apartment Overlooking the River

By • Mar 22, 2018

Upon laying eyes on the modern interior of this renovated apartment that they are standing in an old building from the 20th Century. This is thanks to the extensive remodeling work that was undertaken largely during the 80s, where the building was completely refurbished.

Terrace with wonderful views of the river

The apartment is divided into two different levels: the first, an ordinary residence area; the second, a scarcely-used terrace area above the first, where an informal storage area was built. The intervention reverses the detachment between these two levels and attempts to unite the internal and external areas of the apartment.

Cozy living room with fireplace and wooden floors

The architectural firm Arriba, under the direction of its architects José Andrade Rocha and Filipe Ferreira, was in charge of carrying out the 115 square meter project, which is located in Dom Vasco, Lisbon, Portugal.

Kitchen area with wooden staircase in the center

The proposal reorganizes the spaces of the apartment, empties the terrace, and uses the height of the roof of the uninhabited attic, exposing the structure of the roof and the atmosphere of an old building. The social space now includes the kitchen, while the private spaces meet at the back of the apartment.

The wooden staircase is the organizing element: an integral piece of the apartment that establishes the entrance, the kitchen, and the living room, giving access to the terrace that overlooks the river where you can enjoy the sun.

Apartment with An Industrial Touch in London

By • Mar 19, 2018

This apartment with a stark industrial style is located along the Regents Canal in Islington, London, England, in the United Kingdom. The project consisted of transforming an old family home into a contemporary home, which would be energy efficient and have comfortable spaces.

Upper floor with fireplace

The architect Nicholas Szczepaniak, from the architectural firm Nicholas Szczepaniak Architects, was in charge of the project, which was completed in the year 2017.

Wall of the upper floor in glass that allows the entrance of natural light
Interior of the area covered with wood

The project consisted of a complete remodeling of the three-story property, which covers an area of 163 square meters, including the replacement and expansion of an existing conservatory on the roof to transform it from an unusable storage room into a contemporary living space that can be used throughout the year — and with an outdoor terrace to boot.

Living room with brick wall painted in white

The approach all across the project was to use materials of moderate price, and to add value through meticulous and elaborate details and care during the execution.

Inspired by the old industrial use of the building, the palette of materials incorporates raw and uncovered finishes, such as the original concrete, which contains the marks where the walls were located while the building was used as a factory. In contrast to this, elements such as the kitchen and accessories are done in warm colors and with a texture to create a unique palette of materials and, as a result, a contemporary and cozy atmosphere.
