High Ceiling

The architectural firm Rob Paulus Architects renovated this construction in 2012 for a doctor. Its size is of 4500 ft2, and is located in Tucson, Arizona, USA. This renovation opens up the house to encompass the lush desert landscape while improving the interior of the property. The new shapes are crisp and clean to contrast with the rounded exterior of the existing building.

Using a reductive approach in the interior, the walls are disassembled to provide better function, circulation, and views. Outside, an existing trellis porch transforms into an outdoor living room and a kitchen with a new elevated canopy.

A palette of colors and natural material dominates the new scheme with an emphasis on fir wood that was influenced by the client’s desire to create spaces inspired by nature. This warm wood is used in all interior cabinets, but it also appears on the outside as the bottom part of the roof plane that hangs over the area of the outdoor room. The existing closed house is transformed to interact with the exterior while creating a relaxing interior space in a decidedly modern transformation.

Modern and Simple Coffee in an Area of Exotic Atmosphere Marked by Contrasts
By Magaly • Nov 6, 2018

This modern café is located in the city of Maemachi Chuo-ku Hyogo, in Japan, an area where there are still many old, Western-style buildings which has a very striking and exotic atmosphere. The building where the cafe is located is not an old Western-style building, but it is designed to look like one. Blue Bottle Coffee Kobe Cafe has a high ceiling and ample storage space on the ground floor, located between high fashion brands stores.

The space of 214 square meters was designed by the architectural firm Jo Nagasaka + Schemata Architects, led by the architecture professional Masami Nakata in 2018.

The purpose of the design was to maximize the feeling of spaciousness by building a simple island-style structure where coffee functions are concentrated and seeking to counteract the exotic atmosphere of the area with a simple but distinctive style.

With an industrial style where we can see exposed pipes in the concrete ceiling and simple furniture in light wood, the space invites us to enjoy its simple decoration.

Fantastic Remodeling of a Cabin Dating From the 80s
By Magaly • Oct 24, 2018

Perfectly integrated into the natural environment of a wooded area on the outskirts of Guatemala City and trying to erase the edges between interior and exterior in a particular way is this imposing construction of 415 square meters of construction.

The person in charge of the project, Alejandro Paz, who is a central part of the architectural firm Paz Arquitectura, set to work and remodeled the old construction that had been built in 1985 – and which consisted of a small cabin that had a cantilevered platform of large proportions – in a functional way. The original construction had a triangular metal frame whose structure allowed the platform to fly over the slopes of the mountain. The cabin had only a small social area, a kitchen, and in the upper part a small bedroom.

30 years after it was built, the owners requested an extension in order to obtain more formal spaces with proportions according to their contemporary lifestyle. The forest around the original cabin grew, and the vegetation occupied an important space around the whole project. The design strategy consisted in respecting the original cabin, since the sense of space, risk and permanence of its architectural configuration was valued. In view of the need for a social area and a single bedroom, two independent modules were generated on each side of the original cabin.

Luxurious and Unique Restaurant in the City of Bangkok, Thailand
By Magaly • Oct 22, 2018

This luxurious restaurant, located in Bangkok, Thailand, is not conceived as a decorative interior space, but as a holistic experience that combines art, architecture, food and people. As a ladder emerges and disappears into the sky, NOWHERE captures the moment between the beginning and the end, between space and time, creating a unique social platform. The stairs become the identity of the space, allowing visitors to expand their own perception in an architectural conception that leads to a new culinary experience.

The architectural firm Stu/D/O Architects was in charge of the hand of its professionals Apichart Srirojanapinyo, Chanasit Cholasuek, Park Lertchanyakul and Thanipath Thanawuttimanas to carry out, in 2017, this project that has an area of 250 meters squares.
The seemingly endless stairs offer visitors endless interpretations; alluding to an endless space that allows “space” for the imagination. The unyielding nature of the stairs contrasts directly with the transient nature of the restaurant from day to night.

Traditionally, stairs have been used to connect disparate levels, the stairs in this case form a cohesive whole. Flowing through the entire space, the stairs allow each activity and function to flow without divisions. Offering surreal functionality in its architectural design, NOWHERE is a distinctive gastronomic and social experience.

Charming Cottage Surrounded by Movie Landscapes
By Magaly • Oct 4, 2018

This charming, 81-square-meter cabin is located in Sandefjord, Norway and was recently designed by the team of architects Sebastian Bjercke, Bergur Briem, and Francisco Kocourek at the head of the Thomas Thorsnes project, all belonging to the firm of architecture R21 arkitekter.

The cabin is designed as a pavilion between the other buildings of Sand Farm. The building has the same footprint as a previous annex building and reinterprets the building to meet modern demands. The system of construction of wooden frames is reinterpreted in the new building, with a layer of glass with shutters that close the original volume.

The wooden load columns are on the outside of the glass wall. The construction is located in a concrete basement and consists of four roof frames supported by columns, reinforced by a rigid core that contains a bathroom and kitchen. In the upper part of the nucleus is a mezzanine. All open during the summertime, the building appears as a simple pavilion, an outdoor kitchen under a large roof. The wooden shutters create a flexible outer layer to close the building in varying degrees to the surroundings.

House with Wonderful Views of the Desert
By Magaly • Oct 3, 2018

The Ghost Wash House, as this private property is called, was designed by Architecture – Infrastructure – Research, Inc., which is an architecture and urban design firm focused on applying advanced research methods and sustainable practices into designs that cover the needs and wishes of each client, and which was founded by Darren Petrucci in 2001. The home is located along the lower hillside of the north side of Camelback Mountain in Paradise Valley, a small, affluent town in Maricopa County, Arizona, in the United States. It was completed in 2017 and covers a total ground area of 8,500 square feet.

The site is flanked by two desert washes that move water from the top of the mountain into the valley below. A third topographic condition — a “Ghost Wash” — runs through the center of the site, giving the property its name, and is framed by brick bars.

The eastern of these two protects the wash from the desert sun that shines upon it in the morning. It also houses the garages, the kitchen, an office, and the family room. The western bar shields the property from the intensely hot west sun as it sets in the valley. In turn, it houses the private areas of the home, such as the bedrooms, another family room, and a recreation space. The living room and dining room are house in the interior of a long sequence of courtyards and gardens that flow along the Ghost Wash from the south entry to the north pool house.

Wonderful Integration of two Levels Designed for Specific Purposes
By Magaly • Sep 12, 2018

This triplex, redesigned by the firm Casa14 Arquitetura, had never been inhabited. Seeing it today, few people would say that its spaces were dark and fragmented. Architecture professionals Mariana Andersen and Mariana Guradani, together with Max Heringer and Gabriele Azevedo, were in charge of carrying out the wonderful transformation of this space that has an area of 900 square meters. Located in the city of São Paulo, State of São Paulo, Brazil, the project was undertaken by the firm in the year 2015.

The project aimed to integrate the floors and highlight the character of the materials.
The generous openings in the walls offer a visual connection between different environments in each of the three levels of the apartment. The project also emphasized the relationship between the environment, gardens and circulation. The staircase, a bent steel plate lined with wood at the bottom and white stone at the top, appears as though it were a sculptural element that joins the three decks. The vertical structure stands out.

Each floor was designed for a specific use. In this order: live, work and rest. On the first level are the rooms, the kitchen, and the service area. The second was designed to receive a library of 5,000 titles integrated in a garden where the resident works, reads, and writes. The last level brings with it the leisure area, with a music studio, whirlpool, sauna, and a barbecue, impregnated with a vertical garden in all its extension.

A Renovation that Left Us with Plenty of New Spaces Full of Light
By Magaly • Sep 3, 2018

The Tube Well House is a project located in Ambajogai, a city and a municipal council, Tehsil and subdivision in Beed district in the state of Maharashtra, India. Completed in 2017, it was designed by Atelier Shantanu Autade, and covers a total ground area of 8,500 square feet.

The project arises from the demolition of an existing structure in the core of the town of Ambajogai, as it was structurally unfit for occupation. Following this, a proposal for a new building sprung up — a maternity home (hospital) suited for the climactic conditions of the area.

A study of the site was conducted, after which it was determined that some existing elements should be allowed to have an influence upon the new construction, such as an old tube well built in basalt and a temple adjacent to the north side of the site.

The interior is characterized by high ceilings, which add to the verticality of the structure. The ground floor is divided into two halves by a passageway which connects the front and back streets. This corridor also serves to connect the exterior to the medical, pathology, and gym areas on the ground floor.
On top of the hospital sits a residence, which is connected to the rest of the building by a staircase, and clearly marked as a separate space.

Victorian Residence that Maintains the Charm of the Era
By Magaly • Sep 3, 2018

This Victorian Residence is the result of the efforts of Nick Lukas, architect part of the team at Architecton, a Melbourne-based architectural firm. The home is located in Middle Park, an inner suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, which is situated 4 kilometers south of Melbourne’s Central Business District. The project was completed in 2016, and covers a total ground area of 420 square meters.

The project consists of an addition to a three bedroom private residence, building upon the reputation of Middle Park as home to some of the best preserved and aged architecture in the city of Melbourne. As such, the front façade of the home was left untouched in order to respect this architectural tradition and preserve the historical context of the home, and the addition is located in the back of the original building. The materials used include stone, concrete, and metal, coming together to create a timeless effect.

The addition looks as if it were another building entirely, the styles are so different. While the front has a traditional Victorian front with a delicately trimmed porch, the back is characterized by straight lines and austere surfaces. They are brought together by the interior, which is vast and brightly illuminated, done in neutral tones that bring a sense of serenity and peace to it.

Holiday Home that Combines Modern Architecture with Reclaimed Rustic Materials
By Magaly • Aug 29, 2018

This wonderful holiday home with high wooden ceilings and wide open spaces was designed by the architecture firm Coates Design Architects in 2016 and has an area of 3835 square feet. It is located in a historic mining area in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State, USA, where the climate is extremely cold and snowy in the winter months and scorching during the summer.

Extreme weather conditions challenged the design team to create a comfortable environment without the use of traditional cooling and heating systems with energy consumption

The design created combines a modern sustainable architecture with recovered rustic materials. An entrance hall and a mud room conserve energy and create an elegant entrance in the main living room. This independent room has a double function as a special place to receive visitors and an air chamber to keep the outdoor elements contained. The cold currents of winter and the excessive heat of summer are kept at bay with this simple solution.
There are two master bedrooms and a room with bunk beds in the main house to accommodate family members. The two-car garage has an electric vehicle charging station, a cellar and plenty of storage space.

A Cabin Nestled in a Thick Forest of Sea Ranch, California
By Magaly • Aug 14, 2018

This small and cozy wooden hut has three levels and is located in Sea Ranch, California, United States, in a lush forest. Its construction dates back to 1968 and has been recently remodeled by the architectural firm Framestudio under the supervision of its professional Chad DeWitt.

The house was intended to exemplify how Sea Ranch’s design guidelines could be used to build a well-designed, low-cost weekend cabin. The footprint of the 20′ x 20′ cabin consists of three levels, which open one above the other, forming a loft space. Due to their elemental design and small size, few of these houses remain in their original state.

The Framestudio team recognized the historical importance of the booth and sought to balance the preservation of the historic fabric while making modifications and updates to meet the practical needs of the new owners. A fully functional kitchen, the space for six people to sleep in, and insurable storage areas were some of the priorities. A scheme was developed that restored many of the original details, distinctive of the design, using wood that had been recovered.
In the kitchen, the lower cabinets were replaced by a more functional design made of birch plywood coated with an ultra black laminate.

Modern Construction Designed with a Space Dedicated to the Exhibition of Classic Vehicles
By Magaly • Aug 14, 2018

The architectural firm CU + AR ESTUDIO, under the direction of its professionals Santiago Cuenca, Gabriel Arias and Wilson Andrade, recently designed this modern house, which has a total area of 550 square meters and where there are four bedrooms. It is located on relatively flat land on the banks of the Paute River in Ecuador.

The house is arranged on the ground in a “U” shape enclosing the social area between its lateral arms with the intention of directing the visuals towards the mountains, which are far to the west, creating interesting environments in the interior of the house, thanks to the nuances of colors that the sunsets present.

One of the fundamental requirements of the project was the creation of a space dedicated to the exhibition of classic vehicles and collectable artifacts; For this reason, the proposal raises this space as the protagonist of the project, which integrates all the different areas of the house and can be admired from anywhere in the same.

The house in general offers a direct dialogue between functionalism and nature, and is framed in each space of the house.

The house is for people with a free spirit because of its atmosphere, its subtlety, and eloquence of having arranged windows strategically, so that they frame us outside and allow us to discover the different picturesque sights that nature herself develops in a single day.

By Magaly • Aug 1, 2018

This small mountain refuge could not be more charming. It is located next to the “old” ski slope, near the border post of Pomezní Boudy in the Krkonoše Mountains of Czech Republic. The architects Petr Kolář and Aleš Lapka, of the architectural firm ADR s.r.o., were in charge of carrying out this project, which was completed in 2016.

The mountain lodge is a wooden structure measuring approximately 5.3 meters by 5.6 meters, with an adjacent steel structure terrace of approximately 5.3 meters by 2.5 meters. It has a corridor, a living room with kitchen facilities, a bathroom, and a toilet. The sleeping space extends on the upper level over part of the living room and the lobby, and is accessible via a staircase from the living room.

The living room has an open roof with exposed beams, with the sleeping space under a protective net.

Magnificent Remodeling of a House in Australia
By Magaly • Jul 31, 2018

High ceilings through which the natural light filters in, illuminating the interior spaces, is the first thing you will notice in this house, which was designed by the architectural firm Amrish Maharaj Architect, and which is located in the western suburb of Enmore, Australia.

This modest and semi-detached house was designed in 2018 and has an area of 160 square meters.
Its design was inspired by the lofts and industrial warehouses of New York City, and the centerpiece is a six-meter vacuum with a large window facing north to capture the best of light and give the house a really amazing factor, with a feeling of space seldom achieved.

Previously, the back of this home consisted of a series of small spaces that included a kitchen, a dining room and a laundry room, which restricted access to the back garden. Being oriented to the south, the spaces lacked natural light, which results in artificial lighting used most of the day. The renovation summary included a large and bright space that includes a loft parent retreat, a well-planned kitchen and a family area that flows into the outer space. The extension also needed to be linked to the original house but not imitate it.

- Spacious interior filled with natural light

- Stairs made of black metal and wood
- Modern room in black and white
- Night view from the garden
