Have you always dreamed, since you were just a little kid, of living in a tree house like Robinson Crusoe? We have too! We spent countless days wishing we had a massive tree house in our backyard so we could run around high up in the trees, enjoying the view from above and breathing in the fresh air. Well, some little kids grow up to be designers, and some designers aim to make their childhood dreams come true. That’s exactly what happened in 2016 when Mallinson Ltd and BEaM studio designed and built The Woodman’s Treehouse in West Dorset, England.
Do you remember the iconic quote from the 1980s kids’ TV show The Friendly Green Giant? He used to say “Look up. Look waaaayyyy up”! That’s what you have to do when you go to see The Woodsman’s Treehouse because it’s literally as the name suggests; it’s an actual tree house! Now, when we say that it’s a tree house, we really and truly mean it. This tree house is fully functional and can actually be lived in!
Ramps lead up to a fantastical bridge, which in turn leads to a beautifully sprawling wooden balcony high up in the trees, resting on the strong, dependable branches of a thick old tree. The balcony boasts a built in barbecue and a hammock, as well as an open concept shower space that’s still very private thanks to wooden screens and the natural coverage of the surrounding branches. Those wooden screens perfectly complement the knotted wooden walls around the outside of the home, keeping the whole thing look natural and authentic.
Passing inside through the crystal clear sliding doors takes you into one of the grandest yet space conscious master bedrooms we’ve ever seen. The stark white walls give a slightly contemporary look that contrasts wonderfully with the cozy fur throw, which looks right at home in a tree house, as though you could nestle right into it. These designers did more than just make our childhood dreams come true; they did it with style!
